Free AI girlfriend apps in 2026: what you actually get without paying
Every AI companion platform advertises a free tier, and almost every one of them means something different by it. On one service free means unlimited text for as long as you want it. On another it means five messages — not five a day, five for the entire life of the account — after which the product stops being a product and becomes a checkout page.
That gap is not a detail, because the free tier is the only part of these services you can judge before you spend money. This guide sets out what each platform in our rankings actually gives away, where those numbers come from, and — the part most comparisons skip — what a free tier structurally cannot tell you no matter how carefully you spend it.

Underneath the marketing, free access in this category is built one of three ways, and knowing which one you are looking at tells you immediately what the trial is worth.
A message cap. You get a fixed number of replies and then a paywall. The critical question is the unit: per day, per character, or for the lifetime of the account. Five a day is a usable sampling budget. Five for life is barely a handshake.
A sign-up credit balance. You get an allowance in an internal currency — Moments, DreamCoins, gems, tokens, Coins, XOT — and every action spends from it. These are the only tiers where you can generate media without paying, and they are also the ones where the exchange rate matters more than the balance. A generous-looking grant buys very little if a single video costs most of it.
A feature lock. Chat is open, sometimes generously, but images, voice, video and calls are gated. This is the model that gives the best sense of the writing and the worst sense of the product.
No platform we rank offers a complete experience for nothing, and none of them pretends otherwise for long. The honest ones publish the limit; the rest let you discover it.
One platform gives away unlimited text — until 1 October 2026
Kindroid is the outlier, with an expiry date attached. Free accounts get unlimited messages on Lite, its distilled model — not a message quota, not a coin balance. Alongside that: two companions, one selfie credit every two hours up to two, 5,000 lifetime audio characters, and basic long-term memory recall without the Cascaded Memory reserved for subscribers.
⚠️ Kindroid’s own 18 August update log schedules Lite for retirement on 1 October 2026, replaced by a bounded interaction preview for new users. Everything in this section was documented on 21 August and is accurate today — but the most generous free tier in our rankings is also the one with the shortest remaining shelf life.
The significance is not generosity for its own sake. Chat quality is the single heaviest criterion in our scoring, and it is the one thing a message cap prevents you from evaluating. A platform that lets you talk indefinitely before paying is letting you test the only thing that really matters. Every other free tier on this page asks you to judge a conversation product from a handful of turns.
Kindroid also offers a separate 3-day trial of the full premium feature set. That one does require a payment method, asks for a verified phone number on the web, and converts automatically unless you cancel — all of it disclosed, with a reminder email the day before. Note that the trial does not front-load everything: Kindroid documents 150,000 audio credits at trial start, with the remaining 850,000 released only after conversion. It is a fair trade, clearly stated, but it is a different thing from the free tier.
Five messages is the most common allowance, and it is not a test
At the other end, several platforms converge on almost the same number. Candy AI‘s published free-user terms list up to five chat messages in total across all characters, plus one custom character and one generated image. DarLink AI gives five messages across the lifetime of the account — not per day, not per character. Dreamz.ai showed a total allowance of four.
Five turns is enough to confirm that the chat loads and that the model writes a coherent sentence. It is not enough to establish whether a character holds together, whether a correction sticks, whether memory survives past the current context window, or how the companion behaves when you set a boundary. Those are the behaviours that separate these products, and they all need more room than the free tier provides.
The practical consequence: if you are going to spend five messages, spend them deliberately. Seed a specific detail and ask for it back. Contradict yourself once and see which version returns. Small talk burns the entire budget and tells you nothing.
Daily caps are worth more than lifetime caps
Secrets.ai publishes a $0 plan with 20 sent messages per day and basic memory. Xotic AI describes five messages a day on its free model plus one custom character. Both are modest allowances, but they renew — which means you can run a check today, think about it, and run a different check tomorrow.
That difference matters more than the raw numbers suggest. A daily cap lets you come back after a night’s gap and see whether the companion remembers anything, which is the closest a free tier can get to testing durable memory. A lifetime cap makes that impossible by construction: once it is spent, the only way to continue is to pay.
Only three free tiers let you generate anything
Media is where free access thins out fastest. Xotic AI gives new accounts a one-time 200 XOT welcome balance, and at 50 XOT an image that is four images — enough to see what the generator does, not enough to judge it. Joi AI states in its Help Center that an account receives six free image generations for the lifetime of the account, with free images then stored for seven days. OurDream AI runs everything from a DreamCoin balance where each message costs one coin and an image run cost ten.
Secrets.ai is the instructive counter-example: free users can open the image-generation interface and look at it, but generating requires Moments the free plan does not include. Being able to reach a feature is not the same as being able to use it.
Video and voice calls are locked on every free tier we checked, without exception.
Where these numbers come from — and why that matters
Two kinds of evidence sit behind this comparison, and they are not equally strong.
Some figures are published by the platform: Kindroid’s itemised free tier, Candy AI’s free-user article, Secrets.ai’s tier guide, Xotic AI’s free plan description, Joi AI’s Help Center. These are commitments a company has written down, and they are the most reliable numbers here — though they can change without notice.
Others are measured on our own accounts, and those carry a caveat we would rather state than bury: several of our test accounts already had history on them. When an existing Candy AI account allowed two more messages before hitting the gate, that is not evidence that new users receive two — the published figure of five total is the finding, and the observation is just consistent with it. The same applies to OurDream AI, where our account’s 19 remaining DreamCoins say nothing about the default sign-up grant, and to FLIRTcam.AI, whose homepage describes three messages before registration and three after, while our logged-in account reached its paywall after nine prompts in one session.
That FLIRTcam discrepancy is a dated observation, not a promise of nine messages. Resets, promotions, experiments and account history can all change enforcement. We record the gap rather than resolving it into a number we cannot stand behind.
What every free tier compared
| Platform | Free text allowance | Free media | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindroid | Unlimited on the Lite model — Lite retires 1 October 2026 | 1 selfie credit every 2 hours, up to 2 · 5,000 lifetime audio characters | Published free tier and update log |
| GPTGirlfriend | Terms give examples of roughly 10–20 total messages | Media Coins, separate from message credits | Terms — illustrative, not a guaranteed allowance |
| Dreamz.ai | 4 in total on our account | None reached in our test | Measured, account with prior history |
| FLIRTcam.AI | 3 before registration + 3 after, per the homepage | 1 safe image completed without Premium | Published, and a dated discrepancy with our account |
| OurDream AI | 1 DreamCoin per message, from the account balance | 1 image run cost 10 DreamCoins | Measured, account with prior history |
| Secrets.ai | 20 sent messages per day | None — the generator opens, but needs Moments | Published tier guide |
| Xotic AI | 5 messages a day, 1 custom character | 200 XOT welcome balance = 4 images at 50 XOT | Published free plan |
| Joi AI | Free chat, no numeric cap published | 6 image generations for the account lifetime, kept 7 days | Help Center |
| Candy AI | 5 messages in total across all characters | 1 generated image, 1 custom character | Published free-user article |
| DarLink AI | 5 messages for the lifetime of the account | 2 tokens · 1 image labelled Free trial | Measured, account with prior history |
| Swipey AI | 20 Hearts, 2 per message — the 11th prompt hit the paywall | None reached | Measured · the Terms say “up to five (10) messages” |
| Promptchan | Chat access, metered in Gems | The upgrade card showed 15 Gems; our account showed 0 | Published card, reset cadence unconfirmed |
Free-tier terms change regularly and several of these allowances are not contractual — Kindroid’s Lite tier is already scheduled to change on 1 October 2026. Everything here was checked between 14 and 21 August 2026; always confirm the current terms on the platform before you sign up.
What a free tier cannot tell you
Even the most generous allowance leaves a category of questions untouched, and it is worth knowing which ones before you conclude that a platform is good.
Free access cannot establish durable memory. Same-session recall — seeding three facts and getting them back ten minutes later — mostly demonstrates that a context window is working. Whether a companion remembers you next week is a different mechanism, and no message cap short of unlimited gives you the runway to test it.
It cannot establish media quality, because the generations that free credits buy are usually the cheapest presets at the lowest settings. It cannot establish cost per action at any scale, since a handful of credits never reveals how fast a real allowance drains. And it cannot tell you anything about cancellation and refunds, which is the part of these services that most often disappoints and is only visible once you have paid.
This is why our scoring weights the free tier at 8% rather than treating it as the headline. It answers “does this work?” It does not answer “is this good?”
Match the free tier to the question you are asking
There is no single best free tier, because the allowances are shaped for different things. What there is, is a reasonably clean mapping between what you want to find out and which structure lets you find it out.
To judge the writing, you need room and repetition, which means an uncapped or daily allowance rather than a lifetime one. Kindroid‘s unlimited Lite messages — while they last — Secrets.ai‘s 20 a day and Xotic AI‘s five a day are the three that let you come back tomorrow and see whether anything held.
To see what the image generator produces, you need a credit balance rather than a message count. Xotic AI and Joi AI both hand you a workable budget up front and publish exactly what it is; OurDream AI runs images from the same balance as chat, so the two compete for the same coins.
To sample a specific platform you have already chosen, a five-message tier is enough — provided you spend it on one deliberate test rather than on conversation. Candy AI and DarLink AI fall here.
To compare what a subscription actually costs, the free tier is the wrong instrument entirely. That is a pricing question, and our rankings compare the real billed totals side by side.
This guide deliberately does not name a best free tier, because the allowances are not competing on the same axis: unlimited text and a four-image credit balance answer different questions, and neither is better in the abstract. What can be compared is how honestly each limit is described. Kindroid itemises its free tier to the digit, Secrets.ai, Xotic AI, Joi AI and Candy AI publish theirs, and at the other end sit allowances that are discovered rather than announced.
Use free access for what it is structurally capable of — checking whether the writing is coherent, whether the interface is usable, whether the companion behaves when you set a limit — and treat everything past that point as untested until you have paid for a month. The criteria that decide whether one of these products is worth keeping are, almost without exception, the ones no free tier can reach.
