Rankings · Updated August 2026

The best AI companions, ranked

Nineteen platforms, nine criteria, fixed weights. We publish the weights below so you can disagree with them — and we publish which scores are not yet on that grid, because a ranking that hides its own seams is worth nothing.

The nineteen scores are all on the same grid. Four of them had been produced in August 2026 during a revision of our protocol, on a variant that excluded untested criteria instead of capping them — a more generous treatment that left them sitting high. All four have since been re-issued on the grid below, OurDream AI last, on 19 August 2026. The ⚠ marks are gone because there is nothing left to flag, and the order below is one arithmetic applied nineteen times.

Scores are editorial. Affiliate links fund the site, but they never buy a rating or a position in this table. Where a platform has been assessed without a paid subscription, its score is marked provisional and will be revised, up or down, once it has been.

Every platform in the ranking above now has a published review, so this table lists all nineteen. No score on this page comes from a vendor, a press kit or an affiliate manager, and every row now comes from the same grid. Prices are quoted in the currency each platform charges in and are not converted: Candy AI, GPTGirlfriend, FLIRTcam.AI, OurDream AI, Xotic AI and GoLove AI are geo-priced and served euros when we read them from a European connection, and several of them advertise a low monthly equivalent for a total billed upfront — the figure that leaves your account is the one written here. Prices checked in August 2026.

Methodology

How a score is built

Nine criteria, fixed weights. A score is the weighted sum — never a number we felt was about right. Every review above is now on this grid.

CriterionWeightWhat we look at
Chat quality20%Staying in character, writing quality, memory across a conversation and across days
Character creation12%Depth of appearance, personality, relationship and voice options
Images & video12%What can be generated, at what quality, and how easily from the chat
Real pricing & value12%What you actually pay, how visible it is before sign-up, what the commitment buys
Roleplay & immersion10%Scenario consistency, whether the fiction holds over time
Credits & tokens10%Included allowance, cost per generation, and whether that cost is disclosed at all
Privacy & discretion10%Billing descriptor, named operator, data policy, account and chat deletion
Free tier8%What you can genuinely do without paying, and for how long
Cancellation & refunds6%How you cancel, whether support is involved, what happens to a paid term

Two rules keep the numbers honest. A criterion assessed only from what the platform publishes is capped at 8.0 — we do not award excellence to something we have not seen. And any platform with a capped criterion carries a provisional score until we have tested the paid tier.

Why capping and not excluding. The transitional grid we used briefly in August 2026 dropped untested criteria from the total instead. That sounds fairer and is not: a platform whose free tier is too thin to finish a test has that test removed from its own denominator, so its stinginess raises its score. OurDream AI, the last review re-issued, moved 0.6 points between the two methods on identical evidence — 7.4 became 6.8. Capping keeps the criterion in the total, which is why everything now sits on it.

FAQ

About this ranking

They are gone because the work behind them is finished. In August 2026 we tested ten platforms in a short window and, on four of them, used a transitional variant that removed untested criteria from the total rather than capping them — a more generous treatment that left those four sitting high. All four have now been re-issued on the standard grid, OurDream AI last on 19 August 2026, and it lost 0.6 points on identical evidence. We could have quietly re-sorted the table and said nothing; flagging it while it lasted was the honest version.
No. We earn a commission when a reader signs up through some of our links, and that is how the site is funded — but the score comes from the grid above, and the order comes from the score. No platform sees its review before publication.
That at least one criterion was assessed from what the platform documents rather than from sustained paid use. Those criteria are capped at 8.0, so a provisional score is a floor rather than a guess. It is revised — in either direction — once the paid tier has been tested.
Monthly. Pricing and token allowances in this market change faster than anything else, so every review is re-checked and the ranking re-sorted if a score moves.
Because the grid weights things this market is genuinely bad at — token transparency, free tiers, cancellation terms. A platform can be excellent at chat and still lose points for hiding its prices. If everything scored above 9, the ranking would tell you nothing.

A score is a summary. The review is where the pricing traps, the token costs and the cancellation terms actually live.
