Why adults look for an alternative to Character.AI
Character.AI is the best-known name in the category, and it is free to use: its help center says free, unlimited messaging stays available on every plan. The reasons adults leave it are written in its own documents.
- No adult content, ever. Its help center answers the question directly: “Pornographic content is against our terms of service, and will not be supported at any point in the future.” Its safety page adds that content which breaks its terms or community guidelines is blocked from the conversation — for adults as well as teens.
- An age check you did not ask for. Since late 2025, Character.AI estimates every user’s age from account signals — login information, activity on the platform and signals from third parties. If it concludes you are under 18, you either use the under-18 version or prove your age with a selfie through Persona, its verification provider, and a government ID only if the selfie is not conclusive.
- No open-ended chat under 18. Announced on 29 October 2025, the change took effect no later than 25 November 2025: under-18 accounts lost open-ended chat with characters and keep creative features such as stories. An adult the age check gets wrong lands in that version until they verify.
- The best experience is paid. The free plan has ads, a slow mode and 15 memory pins. Its paid plan, c.ai+, removes ads and adds the full memory set and premium chat styles: $94.99 a year on the US subscribe page, or the equivalent of $119.88 a year billed monthly, on 29 October 2026.
None of this makes Character.AI a bad product — it is a different one. Every platform below is for adults only, allows adult conversation between consenting adults, and keeps its own limits: no minors, and a stop that works. That last point is something we test.

The alternatives, one by one
1. GPTGirlfriend: best if you want Character.AI’s conversation, for adults
What it does well: GPTGirlfriend has the best chat we have scored, 8.6/10. From our test: natural English, a corrected detail remembered 3 times out of 3, and a plain answer that it is an AI. On roleplay it scores 8.2/10: coherent persona, consent first, and an immediate, clean stop.
Price and overall score: €12 a month; 7.5/10, provisional, #1 of 19. Its free account was enough for a meaningful chat and two images (7.4/10). Where it is weaker: privacy and discretion, 4.8/10 — six-year retention and a broad licence over what you write.
2. Secrets.ai: best for long roleplay and privacy
What it does well: Secrets.ai scores 8.0/10 on roleplay and immersion — a coherent consent sequence and an immediate stop — and has the highest privacy score we have given, 6.5/10: a detailed policy and a neutral name on your bank statement.
Price and overall score: $19.99 a month; 6.8/10, provisional, #5 of 19. Where it is weaker: the free tier, 5.5/10 — 20 messages a day, but no Moments; and images and video, 4.5/10.
3. Joi AI: best if you want to keep chatting for free
What it does well: Joi AI scores 7.3/10 on free tier — useful free chat and six free images shown — and 8.3/10 on chat quality, the second best we have scored: a correction remembered, and a plain answer that it is an AI.
Price and overall score: $13.99 a month; 6.1/10, provisional, #6 of 19. Where it is weaker: images and video, 3.0/10, and privacy, 4.8/10. Be careful before paying for media.
4. Candy AI: best if you liked building characters
What it does well: Candy AI has the highest character-creation score of the 19 apps we rank, 8.0/10: an adult age, looks, body and personality set in visual steps, with no prompt to write. We did not generate the finished character.
Price and overall score: €13.99 a month, or €47.88 a year; 6.0/10, provisional, #7 of 19. Where it is weaker: the free plan allows five messages in total, so judge it on one paid month. Candy AI vs OurDream AI compares it with a close rival.
When to stay with Character.AI
If you do not want adult content, Character.AI does something none of the apps above try to do: free, unlimited messaging with a catalogue its own safety page puts at “hundreds of millions of user-created Characters”. For fan fiction, practice conversations or role-play that stays general-audience, that is hard to beat for nothing.
And if its age check put you in the under-18 version by mistake, you do not need to leave: Character.AI’s help center says an adult can verify their age with a selfie, and that an ID is only requested if the selfie is not conclusive. Character.AI says it does not see the ID; Persona handles it.
